Lisha only recognized two words. Cielo meant “sky” or “heaven,” she knew, and posada was “shelter.”

At the first house, the lady who opened the door shook her head. “No, no shelter here.” But her smile was warm.

The lights of the second house seemed welcoming as Cielo knocked on the door. Again, shelter was asked for. Again, the answer was “No.” And now Lisha started to understand how Mary and Joseph had felt that night so long ago.

Lining the sidewalk at Cielo’s house were lit candles in paper bags filled with sand. As the group approached, the door opened. “Welcome! Come inside! There is shelter here.” Cielo’s mother had a special smile for Lisha.
